Detecting and Modifying Hearing Loss Behavior

There are many factors that can contribute to hearing loss. Loud concerts, listening to music with loud earbuds, lawnmowers, loud sirens, even genetics… Hearing loss is irreversible but the exposure and damage can be prevented and the behavior modified.

Hearing loss in adolescents can sometimes cause cognitive problems or interfere with socializing. This is why it is imperative that they get their hearing tested and evaluated early on. The Penn State College of Nursing conducted a study on 134 high schoolers in which they performed hearing tests with 8,000 Hertz of frequency. They measured sensitivity, which identifies hearing loss, and specificity, which identifies if there is no hearing loss. After the second round of testing the specificity decreased from 91.2% to 81.3%.

The hearing protocol frequency at the American Academy of Pediatrics is only 4,000 hertz. Nonetheless, this study proved that adding more frequency helps detect hearing loss in teenagers.
